The outlast trials review!

 

 The Outlast Trials is over the top and franticly entertaining, although it may occasionally become more frustrating than frightening.

Chaos. There isn't any other way to put it. The teammate who just approached turns out to not be a teammate at all but is instead - oddly - their psychotic evil twin who plunges a knife into the player's innards. A gigantic dude is stomping around, looking for an excuse to fly into a frenzy if you move so much as an inch. we grab the film reel and start to flee, even though we already know that doing so will never, ever work out for us here. However, as we do so, we notice a nun mannequin acting exceedingly un-nunlikely in the middle of the table, and we freeze in our tracks. She isn't... Although we aware that the Outlast games aren't recognized for their finesse, she isn't acting in the way we believe she is. our teammate's evil duplicate then stabs us once again, causing us to fall to the ground.

We spend a lot of time in The Outlast Trials stumbling around, lost and terrified, slipping around in the crimson spatter that covers every inch of this place, screaming and running and screaming some more as abominations pulled from a Ronald McDonald fever dream scuttle in our wake, screeching for our blood. 

While we did scream quite a bit, The Outlast Trials isn't very frightening; at least, not in the same manner as its predecessors. The cloying mood has vanished, though it still borrows some elements from its original idea thanks to those oh-shit-he-saw-me cat-and-mouse pursuit scenes. Yes, it makes us scream, but only because, once more, we've been surprised by a guy lurking in a locker, or because our stamina has run out - AGAIN - and we can hear the puppeteer chuckling behind.

It won't stop you from having a bloody good time, though, even if we anticipate that will disappoint some who spend a lot of time crawling through the dimly lit corridors of Mount Massive Asylum with sweaty palms and a tangy, metallic taste in the back of their throats. We undoubtedly did.
